Tatts Finke Desert Race turns 50 as Hemsworth film gains momentum

The King’s Birthday long weekend saw competitors and fans gather in Alice Springs for the 50th running of the Tatts Finke Desert Race, now attracting Hollywood attention with a film in development by Chris Hemsworth’s production company, Wild State.

One of the most iconic events on the motorsport calendar, the two-day race had more than 600 competitors on motorbikes, cars and buggies to tackle a 460km round trip between Alice Springs and the Aputula (Finke) community across rugged desert terrain.

As we congratulate all competitors and winners across the cars and bikes categories, our thoughts are with the family and friends of motorcyclist Matthew Bielefeld who tragically died while competing in the first leg of the race.

President of the Tatts Finke Desert Race Antony Yoffa said reaching the 50-year milestone highlights both the event’s legacy and the importance of long-term partnerships.

“Their support over the past 27 years has helped ensure the race remains a world-class event while staying true to its roots here in Central Australia.” 

For The Lott by Tatts NT, 2026 marks 27 years as the proud naming rights partner, with $30,000 contributed to the local community this year alongside the Finke Desert Race committee.

Our Senior Community Partnerships Manager Liz McPherson said this commitment reflects a deep connection to the region.
